MM Round 4: ROI Rankings

Earnings data comes with a dozen or more caveats, the most significant being its limited coverage of graduates: only those who received federal aid will have their salaries included. Cohort sizes have to meet a certain threshold for privacy protection as well. Nonetheless, there are six majors which are offered by all 8 remaining teams in the NCAA tournament and for which we have earnings data--that's something we can work with!

Why not put this data to especially good use by customizing it? This little tool takes home state and particular major into account when ranking each school's ROI for the user.

It's an age-old maxim in admissions that the answer to every question is, "it depends." And so it goes with the student's college choice. To be sure, earnings are but one consideration to factor into the college search. Moreover, the amounts exist as snapshots in time--people lose jobs, change careers, and hone new skills every day. I wish we had a way to measure how well one's college will prepare them to navigate changes beyond the first job.

When you click around in this tool, look for shifts between rankings when you change majors. What seems to matter more, the college or the field of study?

My final two tournament posts will be published after MCD goes to its new family-facing interface on April 1. If you haven't already joined our mailing list, please do. We'll shoot you an email when it's up and running!
